We believe that sustainable management and multiple use of the region's landscape resources (forests, lands, waters) will be critical to achieving future prosperity for the region.  To maintain and maximize the full breadth of benefits and opportunities encompassed in these resources, groups with ownership, community, environmental, and economic interests relating to these resources must begin to share knowledge and work more collaboratively.

Desired Outcomes (MWC Coordinating Team, 6/08)

  • Keep forests as forests
  • Farmlands conserved
  • Better local understanding of new uses (wind power)
  • Better communication among user groups

Consortium Activities: What can/does MWC contribute?

Local Area Resource Studies
Based on the model for local area resource studies developed by the Northern Forest Alliance and others in the Mahoosuc region, MWC has supported a similar study in the High Peaks (Longfellow Range) area and has identified additional projects that have similar goals and practices in other parts of the Maine Woods, notably a study undertaken by the Moosehead Futures group of natural areas used by local guides and outfitters. Long term, MWC will support information exchange among local groups relating to best practices and findings.
Related Workgroups: Northern Franklin County Mapping Project

Coordinating Team proposals for future Consortium activities

  • Develop local models for landowner relations programs, activities.
  • Multi town planning for multi-modal trail systems (linking smaller towns).
  • Landscape level tourism planning (includes service centers, transportation, land conservation, green infrastructure).
