YOU ARE INVITED: Rally for Maine Mountain Heritage Area to Feature Panel on National Designation.
On
May 19th at the University of Maine at Farmington, Annie Harris,
executive director of the Essex National Heritage Area in Massachusetts
(image right), will offer observations about the value of
national heritage area designation in support of local heritage
conservation and development projects. Harris will present her remarks as part of a panel discussion titled "National Designation … or is there a better way?"
Vaughn Stinson, chief executive officer of the Maine Tourism
Association, and Patrick Strauch, executive director of the Maine
Forest Products Council, will look at the question from tourism and
landowner perspectives. Richard Barringer of the Muskie School of
Public Service will moderate the panel.
The panel is part of a
day long conference intended to provide an opportunity for residents of
the Maine Mountain Heritage Area (Oxford, Franklin, Somerset, and
Piscataquis Counties) to review initiatives of the Maine Mountain
Heritage Network and to offer opinions about the national designation
opportunity. National designation of the Maine Mountain Heritage Area
could result in as much as $1 million per year for ten years in new
federal funding for the region to support heritage-based projects and
marketing.
Other panel topics include: ways to coordinate land
conservation and recreation development in the Maine Mountain region;
approaches to revitalizing the area's towns and villages; and new
strategies for stimulating development and marketing of "signature"
products for the region. (For more information on these panels, see "Breakout Panels" below.)
There is no charge for the conference, but to reserve a seat and a box lunch, participants must register by May 10th online at www.mainemountains.org. All are invited.

BREAKOUT PANELS: Explore Strategies for Achieving Prosperous Future for the Maine Mountain Region
How
can we best organize ourselves to use our region's natural, historical,
and cultural assets to insure a prosperous future for the Maine
Mountain region? That is the subject of four "breakout" sessions
featured at the May 19th Rally for the Maine Mountain Heritage Area,
a day long conference at the University of Maine at Farmington. Rally
participants will consider aspects of the strategic plan put forward by
the Maine Mountain Heritage Network, review progress on pilot projects
which the group has underway, hear panel presentations on a variety of
strategies and approaches being tested in the field, and select from
among these for future Network initiatives. (To see the Network's
strategic plan, go to www.mainemountains.org/network/plans/strategic.htm)
Panels will include:
Knowledge Power: How will we deepen knowledge and understanding of the heritage assets of our region?
Panelists will include Julie Bartsch, Rural School and Community Trust,
speaking on place-based education; and Matt Kirchman, director of
exhibits for Krent Paffett Carney Associates (Boston), designers of the
Northern Forest Center's Ways of the Woods traveling exhibit, speaking
on effective exhibit design. Anyone with an interest in marketing and
education is invited to participate in this session.
Woods and Waters: How can we coordinate recreation development and land conservation in our region to gain world-class destination status?
Panelists will include: Larry Warren, Western Mountains Foundation,
speaking on the Maine Huts and Trails project; Bryan Wentzell,
Appalachian Mountain Club, speaking on the AMC Maine Woods project
(Katahdin Iron Works area); and Luke Muzzy, speaking on Plum Creek's
proposed development in the Moosehead area. Those who are interested in
land conservation and recreation development are encouraged to
participate in this session.
Village Works: What is the most effective way to revitalize our service center communities?
Panelists will include John Simko, Greenville town manager, speaking on
multi town coordination of services and taxation; Audrey Lovering,
Skowhegan Main Street manager, speaking on the Maine Street approach to
downtown revitalization; an invited representative speaking on the
Libra Foundation's Norway project and the role of the private
developer. Those who work to insure the future health and prosperity of
our mountain communities are invited to participate.
Mountain Made: Can we use the character values of our region to create a brand to support sales of products grown or made here?
Panelists will include a representative of the Poland Spring Bottling
Company speaking on the use of Maine imagery in marketing their product
and Tracy Stutzman, Maine Highlands Guild, speaking on selling crafts
and specialty foods using the Maine Highlands image. We are especially
interested in engaging product makers and growers in discussion of this
regional marketing approach.
Register online at www.mainemountains.org by May 10th and indicate which session you would like to participate in. |
